You have probably noticed that the internet and social media are here to stay.  Being online is a great way to keep in touch with family, friends, and brands that you are interested in.  You can use social media to check out companies you might want to work for, research products before you buy, and find out how long-lost acquaintances have fared in life (yes, we all do it).  The internet and social media can also be powerful tools in your house hunting tool kit.  Check out these 3 ways you can look online to find your dream home.

1. Preview houses

Whether it is for sale by an owner or listed with a Realtor, virtually every property in Canada can be seen online.  Take some time to check out different houses to get an idea of ones you would like to view in person and to eliminate properties you are not interested in seeing.  You can also peruse online listings to get an idea of what is available in your budget and how far your dollar will stretch in different areas of the city.  And of course, you can check out properties for decorating inspiration!

2.  Get to know your new neighbourhood

Many cities, towns, and neighbourhoods have an online presence.  Facebook can be a great way to get to know your new community.  Look for local pages that discuss community issues or advertise community events.  People love to share their experiences, so jump into the discussion and ask what residents like the most about the area.  It is a wonderful way to get a first-hand account of the features and benefits of that community alongside issues or concerns that may affect you.

3.  Check out local stores and services

There are different online review sites you can look at to learn more about the stores and services located in your potential new neighbourhood.  Find out why residents love the local coffee shops and funky boutiques.  This is also a great way to figure out where your favourite activities are located.  If you have family members who are heavily involved in a particular sport or activity, you can make sure you settle somewhere that is within reasonable driving distance.

Put the time you spend online to good use and find out as much as you can about the neighbourhoods you are interested in.  Connect with me on Twitter @kimtwohey.  I love to share information about houses, great Calgary businesses, and things to do in the city.  See you online!
