Today, more than ever, many people want to find ways to minimize their environmental footprint.  Environmentally friendly habits are becoming second nature to many of us as we do things like recycle or minimize the use of dangerous chemicals.  Our homes can also give us opportunities to be more environmentally friendly.  How?  I am so glad you asked!

There are many ways you can go green outside your home and inside.  Here are a few ideas to help get you started.

Go green outside

  • When buying, building, or renovating, look for products that are made from recycled materials.
  • Install solar panels to help harness the energy of the sun.
  • If you are adding a deck or garden boxes, try to find reclaimed wood and other used materials.
  • Use rain barrels.
  • Xeriscape.
  • Compost.
  • Leave clippings on your lawn after cutting the grass.
  • Plant an edible garden.
  • Water wisely.
  • Use organic fertilizer.

Go green inside

  • Install and properly use a programmable thermostat.
  • Use reclaimed or recycled products whenever possible.
  • Use plants as natural air fresheners.
  • Use vinegar and other natural cleaners.
  • Ensure your heating and cooling systems are running properly for maximum efficiency.
  • Use energy efficient appliances whenever possible.
  • Wait until you have a full load before you run your dishwasher, washing machine, and dryer.
  • Use energy and water wisely.
  • In the summer, use your window coverings to block the sun so rooms do not get too hot.
  • In the winter, let the sun shine into your rooms to help warm them up.
  • Properly dispose of things like batteries, paint, prescription medications, and light bulbs.
  • Recycle, donate, and reimagine products instead of throwing them out.
  • Recycle your old electronic equipment and cell phones.
  • Insulate your hot water heater.
  • Ensure that your exterior doors and windows are well sealed.
