Maximizing Your Watering Efforts

Mother Nature usually provides enough water through rainfall for grass to grow strong. However, there are times when rainfall needs to be supplemented, such as with newly planted lawns or extended periods of heat and drought. If you choose to water, wait until the lawn becomes dull green in colour and footprints remain visible in the grass.

Be sure to water deeply and infrequently. Avoid watering from 11am–3pm, the hottest part of the day. It is best to water between 6–10am. There’s less wind, less hot sun, and your lawn has a full day to dry. Watering at night invites mildew and fungus but if you can’t water in the morning aim for around 4–7pm. If using sprinklers, apply about a ½ inch of water twice per week.

Seniors Property Tax Deferral Program Information

The Seniors Property Tax Deferral Program (SPTDP) allows eligible senior homeowners to defer all or part of their property taxes through a low-interest home equity loan with the Alberta government. If you qualify, the Alberta government will pay your residential property taxes directly to your municipality on your behalf. You re-pay the loan, with interest, when you sell the home, or sooner if you wish. The SPTDP is a voluntary program.

To qualify for the Seniors Property Tax Deferral Program, you must:

  • Be 65 years or older
  • Be an Alberta resident
  • Own a residential property in Alberta
  • Have a minimum of 25% equity in your home
  • Only residential properties are eligible. The home must be your primary residence (that is, the place where you live most of the time)
